The Lambiel Museum

Project: Website, photography

The Lambiel Museum houses the world's largest collection of work created by San Juan Islands' artists and craftsmen. The museum is displayed in the home of Leo Lambiel, who offers a guided tour by appointment.

Touring the museum is an almost overwhelming experience, as the collection is quite large and comprehensive. In addition to paintings, sculpture, fiber art, glass, and other media displayed inside the house, there are outdoor sculptures, a subterranean fantasy grotto, and a “folly:” a ruined Greek temple. The Lambiel Museum also exhibits the largest collection of work by the noted Northwest artist Helen Loggie.

It was quite a challenge to design a website that could convey the full scope of this outstanding collection of art. Instead of trying to show everything, I concentrated on creating two photo tours: one that displays highlights of the main collection, and one that focuses on the Loggie works. I photographed Loggie's work both at full size and also as closeups in order to show the incredible detail in her pencil drawings and etchings. A strong grid anchors the pages and allows for several variations in the layout.
